US Steel Imports Rise in 2011

The Journal of Commerce Online – News Story

Steel imports rose 18.9 percent to 23,929 million tons last year, including a 6.6 percent year-over-year increase in December, the Commerce Department said.

The increase in 2011 showed “the continued slow improvement in market conditions inmany steel-consuming sectors,” said David Phelps, president of the American Institute for International Steel. He noted that semifinished imports used by domestic industries jumped 31.7 percent to 6.68 million tons.

Phelps said early signs point to continued market strengthening this year. “With steel consumers and distributors starting the year with low inventories in the environment of improving demand and rising prices, there is some optimism in the marketplace for both the domestic industry and importers at this time,” he said.

December volume totaled 1.996 million tons, down 5.9 percent from November. Phelps said import orders slowed last fall when domestic steel prices softened amid concerns about a double-dip recession.

“After that lull in import ordering, pent-up demand and low inventories have appeared to have created a new confidence in consumers which is being reflected in a new round of import ordering, hopefully bolstering arrivals in the first quarter. We also believe that many consumers delayed deliveries of steel in December due to end-of-year inventory taxes in many states, suggesting that some of the decline was seasonal in nature,” Phelps said.

Container volumes grow fast in Piraeus!

January 27, 2012 in Uncategorized

Piraeus Port Authority SA (PPA) (PPA), operator of Greece’s largest port, said the number of containers handled at the harbor in 2011 almost doubled from the previous year.

The port handled just over 1.68 million so-called twenty- foot-equivalent units last year, up from 878,083 in 2010, the authority said in astatement late yesterday on its website.

Of the containers offloaded at the port in 2011, PPA handled 500,133 at the Pier I terminal, a more than three-fold increase from 2010, while Piraeus Container Terminal SA, the Greek unit of Cosco Pacific Ltd (1199), processed 1.18 million containers at the port’s Pier II terminal, a rise of 73 percent, the authority said.

Greece plans to sell its 74.5 percent stake in PPA this year as part of a state asset sale and real-estate redevelopment program.

The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) has signed an agreement with Aitken Spence and China Merchants Holding (International) to construct the first container terminal at the new deepwater port to be built next to the Port of Colombo.

The $500 million South Container Terminal will be built and operated by Colombo International Container Terminals (CICT), according to Sri Lanka Business Online.

CICT is jointly owned by China Merchants Holdings, Aitken Spence and the SLPA, with shares of 55 percent, 30 percent and 15 percent respectively.

An agreement has been reached for the site lease, shareholders agreement, direct lenders agreement and facility agreement, according to a statement released by the SPLA.

Construction works for the CICT terminal will begin next month, with operations expected to begin at the start of 2014. The terminal is scheduled to be fully completed in 2016.

When completed, the terminal will have the capacity to handle 2.4 million containers a year.

“The construction of this terminal is one of the largest Public Private Partnership projects recently in Sri Lanka,” commented the SLPA.

The project will be predominantly financed by China Merchant Holdings who will provide a shareholder loan up to $350 million, with the remaining funds being raised by shareholder equity.

The intent of developing this site and attached blog is to collect and share information on port and terminal operations. We see this as wide as possible, without limiting the scope to a type of commodity. We will write about container handling, general cargo, break bulk, dry bulk, liquids etc.

Besides the stevedoring operations, subjects related to port operations in general will be covered, applying to any model of port organisation: landlord, service or tool port.

Topics such as design, feasibility studies, construction, implementation, specification, tendering, reporting and monitoring, optimisation etc. will be discussed at this forum.
